WELLINGTON A DEFEAT
AUCKLAND
NELSON DRAW WITH B TEAM,
Beautiful weather favoured the opening of the hockey shield tournament at the Basin Reserve an Saturday afternoon. The fine conditions brought a good Qi-owd to the ground, it being estimated that there wera about 2500 people present. Of the five provinces represented in the tourney, three were engaged in tiie opening matches, the Wellington A and B teams meeting Auckland and Nedson respectively. Ihe playing area was in «perleot condition, and both games were played at a very fast rate throughout. A draw resulted from the NelsonWellington B meeting, after an exhilarating display of' hockey. The Wellington A team were more fortunate, scoring a decisive victory over Auckland by S goals to.l. This game, while not so fast as the othor, was more spectacular, and the home team thoroughly deserved their win. Their forward line was almost unbeatable, and their halves and full-backs were in great fettle. The Auckland players, with few exceptions, did not come up to expectations, although eoni* of their field tactics were admirable, and were well executed.
