CARILLON PROPOSAL REJECTED,
The proposal that the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial should take the form of a carillon was rejected by the Citizens' War Memorial Committee at its meeting last night. Those present were : Messrs. J. P. Firth, C.M.G. (chairman), C. A. L. Treadwell, D. J. M'Gowan, G. Mitchell, A. W. Pascoe, D. E. Dustin, E. E. Muir, F. Downes, B. Van Staveren, W. S. Wilson, A. Jolly, T. Forsyth, Mesdames Murphy, M'Hugh, and Parton, and Major Watson (honorary secretary!. _ A letter was received from the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association condemning the proposal to erect a carillon, and urging the committee to proceed forthwith with the original proposal to erect a symbolical memorial on the Parliamentary Grounds site. The sub - committee (comprising Messrs Mitchell and Muir) which had been specially appointed to report upon the question of the proposed carillon, submitted a lengthy report. After a prolonged discussion it was unanimously resolved : "That it be recorded and announced that this meeting of the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial Committee, having considered the report of the sub-committee on the question of the carillon, reaffirms its former resolutions that a. silent symbolical memorial be erected on the Parliamentary Grounds site." Final correspondence was received from Mr. W. H. Gummer, the committee's expert adviser, regarding the conditions of the competition for competitive designs, and it is anticipated, that these will be announced in the immediate future.
