NEW YORK, 21st July.
Warm passages were frequent, between the opposing counsel at the trial of Scopes, at Dayton, Tennessee, for violating the Tennessee law which forbids the teaching of evolution.
Mr. W. J. Bryan, who entered the witness-box, replying to Mr. Darrow's questions as to whether he believed that tho whale swallowed Jonah, and whether he believed God made a whalo big enough or Jonah small enough, declared that he believed that God could make ■i fish big enough to swallow a. man. He believed wnat the Bible said. One miracle was just as easy to believe as another. Asked if he believed that Joshua commanded the sun to stand still, Mr. Bryan said he accepted the Bible story absolutely. Asked what would happen if the world stood still, he replied, "God would take care of that." Ho added that he was there- to protect revealed religion.
An appeal against the conviction of Scopes is to be lodged in the Supreme Court of Tennessee. The defence has already prepared its case for appeal, even before the verdict of guilty is given, considering it a foregone conclusion that Scopes will be convicted.
