BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS

WELLINGTON CENTRE CONTESTS

AT BLENHEIM.

IBY TELEO RATH,-—PRESS ASSOCIATION,}

BLENHEIM, 21st July.

7he Wellington Centre Boxing Championships opened here to-night, when the first round of the featherweight, welters, and lightweights were decided, and the final of the middleweight. Results:—

Featherweight—Mark Carroll, 9st (Mnnawatu) beat Les O'Donnell Bst 91b (Msilbcrough). The visitor had too much experience for the local boy, and won all but tho second round with ease.

Welterweight—W. H. Pearce, lOsfc 61b (WelJ-ugton), beat C. Rivers, lOst Oglb (Taranaki) after four willing rounds. Peareo was an aggressive whirlwind, and had a better knowledge of ringcraft, but Rivers gave him all he could stand in the last round. It was a most unpopular decision.

Clarie Woods (Wellington) won the flyweight by default. Middleweight (final)—W. Satherley (Marlborough) list 41b beat R. Johansen list (Wairarapa). This bout was one of wild hitting and clinching, and had not much to commend it.

Lightweight—Jack Rodda 9st 91b (Marlborough) beat Slater Hayes 9st 101b (Manawatu) in fast four rounds, which were willing from end to end. In the fourth Slater was sent down for nine seconds, and immediately after went down again as the towel came in, and the referee stopped the fight. The Manawatu boy fought pluckily.

Ted Morgan 9st lOAlb (Wellington) beat R. Loveridge 9st 13^1b (Taranaki), the New Zealand champion, after tho best bout of the evening. Morgan stood well up to the champion in the first round, connecting with both hands. The second round saw some pretty infighting, both lads scoring heavily. In the third round the champion made up some leeway in close-in work, Morgan evening up in the open, and so far the honours were fairly even. In the fourth round, some clever work was seen by the Wellington boy, who stood off and made his points. He also had his own at close quarters. In a very even battle Morgan got the decision by a narrow margin. The finals will be fought to-morrow night.
