Barnes, winner of this year'sopen golf championship, was .born in Cornwall In 1905 he was a caddie at Lelant, Cornwall, but went to America in his teens, where he is now one ofj&e' most popular professionals in the United States, ,He won the American open championship in 1921, was third in 1916, ninth in 1919, and fourth in 1920. He .held the-western open championship of America in 1914, 1915, 1916, 1917, and 1919, and won the Professional Golfers' Association (America) championship in 1916 and 1919, . and was runner-up in the same event in 1921 and 1924.
