Shepherd has been set free.
i^ I" i ! -evidence- during the trial, which -tested.six weeks, was Circumstantial, and the prosecution admitted that the testimony of its chief witness, Paiman, was unreliable. During deliberations lasting five and a half -Sours,-only one juror favoured the minimum murder punishment, and the - others ■ advo.cated -acquittal.. ■-..■'"-,- :, :. The nine cousins of M'Clintock will' contest the bestowal of the million dollars estate on Shepherd, alleging that Hn U?£ f .^a^fl^ncß in the preparation of the will, which was drawn up by Shepherd. : . . _-At the'trial Miss Isabelle Pope, M'Clintock s fiancee, testified that Shepherd delayed the marriage ceremony for fear of losing the settlement. ' She admitted' that M'Clintock's cousins agreed to split the benefits if the will was broken. When the verdict was announced, the Court became a, bedlam of congratulations to Shepherd, and the photographers' flashlights boomed over the gesticulating .and shouting crowd. [William Shepherd and Charles Faiman were charged with the murder, by inoculation with typhoid germs, of William M'Clintock-, an orphan millionaire, aged 21 years Shepherd was I;h e fcteifather and chief heir of M'Clintock. J?aiman, who is a bacteriologist, confessed that he conspired with Shepherd to introduce typhoid germs into M'Clintock as soon as his victim had made a will leaving his fortune to Shepherd This M'Clintock did ]
