DAVIS CUP FINAL
FORMIDABLE EXPENSES LIST
WHAT AUSTRALIA LOST LAST YEAR.
Tho Australasian association has issued the report and balance-sheet for the year'..ended'"3lst March, to be presented at the annual general meeting to be held in Sydney on 29th June, states the Melbourne "Age." Referring to last year's Davis Cup'matches, the report says:— . .;■■ ,'[ -
"The association's participation in tlie Davis Cup competition of 1924 proved a financial failure, a loss 0f.£1479 18s 7d heing sustained. , This was caused by the formidable total of expenses and .the disappointing receipts from the matches played. The increase of expenditure, as compared with previous years, is chiefly accounted for by reason of the team, at the request of the players, through.the captain, being despatched from- Australia some -,five weeks earlier than was; customary :in order to allow of more-time for team practice, acclimatisation,"etc., also that; .Mr.' Brookes's . attendance was called upon and his expenses paid. The lessening of receipts (£3106 Is 6d, as compared with the figures for 1923) was brought about by our players not. showing to ■advantage _iri the challenge round: and; in the prior -competitions which they were engaged in. Consequently, comparatively,.little interest) was manifested in that- round, -and the attendances fell Xar short of. expectations.' 1 V .'
