GOODSELL VICTORIOUS

CHALLENGER'S EFFORTS DISAPPOINTING

NEVEE LOOKED LIKE WINNING,

(BNrTBD PEISSS ASSOCIATIOS—COPSEIOHT.)

SYDNEY, 27th June.

Many thousands of people lined the banks of the Parramatta River, in fine but dull weather, to witness the contest for the world's sculling championship between Major Goodsell, the holder, and J- P. Hannan, the New Zealandar. A/ south-west breeze was blowing, which militated against both men's chances for a_mile and a half. Thereafter the turn of the river put them out of its range. Both men were in perfect condition, although Goodsell looked the better of the two. ..■:..-

When the pistol went Goodsell canght the water first and shot ahead, bat Hannan in the first sixty yards drew level. This was the only "time the New Zealander was on terms with the champion. Goodsell was rowing 28 to the minute to Hannan's 30, and established _a lead of four. lengths, which he maintained throughout. When the first ;200/yards had been .passed Goodsell had a lead of five lengths, and was rowing strongly. Approaching the gasworks GoodseU led by ten lengths. Hannan, who appeared ; distressed, although the pace was an easy one, here spurted and decreased the Australian's lead to five lengths. Hannan at, this time was rowing 29 to the minute. The burst was only a flash in the pan, but Hannan continued to make strenuous efforts to reduce his opponent's lead. It was a. vain effort, Goodsell keeping in advance and apparently rowing without strain. He kept well in the lead until near the finish, when he eased up and won by three lengths. Ulis time was 21min 31sec. The first mile was covered, in 6min.. 4sec. Haunan's time was 21miri 35sec. • ■-■" ■■■■.., ■ .

Tlie race -was disappointing to Han-i nan's supporters, as the New Zealandeil never oncb looked like a winner. Goodsell took command at the. starjb and had complete control of the race.
