WELLINGTON REPRESENTATION
NECESSITY POB ACTION
A meeting of the Wellington District BepTesentation Committee of the New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition was held last. evening, Mr. J;-'.R. Simpson presiding. The chairman reported that since the last meeting the Wellington City Council had voted £1500. . It was also announced that the Wanganui Borough Council had' granted £250, and the Harbour Board had agreed to give £100. The chairman remarked that from reports received it seemed that the provincial district was luke warm in the matter, and it-.looked, as if the Wellington district display would be one of the worst in the Exhibition.. City Councils and local bodies in other parts of the Dominion were coming forward with grants, but iv this district support had to be sought. It was estimated that a sum. of.at least £6000 was necessary to have a show worthy of Wellington. . ;Mr. A. L. Hunt reported.- the results o£ visits, to Palmerston North and Wanganui. ''■ The trouble was that the enthusiasm subsided' once the organisers departed. •* -,'. . '. ■ , ■I Mr. J. W, Collins,. Secretary, Department of Industries and Commerce, urged that strenuous efforts should be made ferine thj?/next twb-or three weeks. :'' ■■ .■•■■• AN INCENTIVE. : :< - ; Mr. C. M. Bowden remarked that the Wellington City 'Council had given quitp a handsome lead, which should act an an incentive to bodies in other parts of .the. provincial district.. . Under the present, circumstances he doubted the wisdom of booking 5000 feet of space. :It would he better to take 2500 feet and make a good exhibit than take 5000 feet and make a disappointing display. The Mayor, Mr. C. J. B. Norwood, suggested that a circular letter-be sent to prominent ■ people, pointing out the situation, and. the danger of an inadequate exhibit from this district. Mr. J. W. Collins pointed out that local bodies could make grants if special legislation were passed enabling themto_ do #o. It was agreed that a committee wait on the Government) in regard to the passing of the necessary legislation. ......... ■ , . It was resolved that the local newspapers be requested to support the movement by giying more publicity.
