The French Minister regrets to bring to the knowledge" of the Chinese Government that,, following the; demonstrations at Canton on 22nd June, the demonstrators, who were soldiers, fired upon the English and French Concessions at Shameen. A .French merchant was killed by a shot from the Chinese bund. The i-Minister adds that reports from the com-* rmandant of the.French naval forces makes it clear that the responsibility falls entirely on the; Chinese, and the Minis-, I-tor ■is : consequently compelled to protest and reserve the right for the French Government to demand reparations.
