COFFEE CROP FAILURE

A world shortage of coffee is: predicted ■* within 12 months,-since it appears that the crops for 1925-26 may be well bulow. the average, -says the "Morning -Lost. ■ Supplies for the 'coming year aro estimated at about 20,000,000 bags, while the demand two years ago amounted to 22,000,000 bags and probably will not be much below that figure this year. The reserve or "visible" supplies will.be able to meet the difference between the demand and the quantity of coffee available. The shortage will be felt more abroad than in England, where the conSumption, of coffee, though growing, remains comparatively low. America takes about half of the world's production, and after the advent of Prohibition the habit of coffee drinking'increased. Last year, however, .the demand slightly lessened, to the satisfaction of those endeavouring to release stocks held at an artificially high price in' Brazil. The threatened shortage may lead to as much gambling in coffee shares as there was not long ago in tea. . .
