A HANDSOME BUILDING
DRUIDS' HOME IN WELLINGTON,
The seven-storied building which las recently been erected at the corner of ■Jjamoton quay and Woodward streets by the Grand Lodge of Druids is now in occupation. The structure is a striking tribute to: the progressive nature of the lodge and the members of the United t Ancient Order of Druids.
Jhe building has a frontage of 26ft to Lambton quay and 107 ft to Woodward street. The construction is steel Irame encased' in concrete, with reinforced concrete walls.'floors,.* and roof, and comprises shops ami offices on the ground floor, and offices on the remaining floors. The entrance is on the Woocfwiird street frontage, giviii" access through the tiled, vestibule to" the efevator,_ which serves the floors above. Tho lighting of the building is admirable, while ample strong-room space, lavatory . accommodation, and goods-lilt make it quite up to date and valuable from the commercial standpoint. This exterior is treated in a simple though dignified manner, and crowned by a large overhanging cornice, -which, with tho enrichments "and -panels below it, .make-a pleasing feature of the dcsi"t) The-building is heated by hot water "radiators, and hot water is also supplied to the basins and sinks in the lavatories. The construction of the steel frame itself embodies all tho best of tho methods usually adopted in earth.quake countries. The window sashes ars of steel, and everything has been done to make the building fire-resisting. Practically the only timber in the building is the office doors. Altogether, the building is an acquisition to tho street architect t-nre of Wellington. The architect was Mr. Lewcllyn Williams.
