A lew days ago there:passed away afi Matakana.-Island 'the well-known" half- 1 .caste chibt, Joe Murray. The deceased's father was a .well-known trader, shipwright, and boat-builder, who settled Jii the Bay ..of Plenty •nearly. ICO years ago, being one of our earliest settlers' lor many years. The deceased and his brothers assisted their father in ' his trading operations and on the tvndin" vessels, including the cutter Karawa. one of the largest cutters on the coast of kew Zealand, which was afterwards converted into a ketch. They, at that time, had interests at Boat Harbour, near Tairua, and on Tauraaga Harbour. Deceased was a factor for good amonIns Maori people, and a> keen sup" porter o£ sports of all kinds, including an annual, horse-race..meetiug near his home on the island. Many of his descendants have made their names in the athletic world, especially in Rugby and boxing.
