THE COAL MINERS
- o CANCELLING REGISTRATION IS MOVEMENT GROWING IN THE SOUTH? Some significance may be attached to the fact that a number of miners' unions which are registered under the Arbitration Act have failed to submit their annual returns to the Labour Department. In consequence of this neglect the Registrar of Unions has notified that unless cause to the contrary is shown the registration of the unions concerned will be cancelled at the expiration of six weeks from 30th May. For some time past a movement has been gaining strength in tho ranks of the miners in various parts of the Dominion, whereby the registration of certain unions is being cancelled, and they are joining up with a new organisation which had its genesis on the West Coast called the United Coal Mine Workers of Aew Zealand. The object of this body is to take and hold the means of production, distribution, and exchange by revolutionary, industrial, and political action. • fi Th v m? v«"J enfc has gained ground in the North Island, and it is believed it is now finding favour amongst organisa- I tions intho south, which up till now I have shown no tendency or desire to break away from the Arbitration Court Xhe miners at the Taupiri coal minei Huntly notified their intention of cancelling their registration some time aeo and their union is amongst those concernnig which the Eegistrar of Unions threatens to take action if cause is not shown to the contrary within the specified time Uther miners unions similarly affected are the Mount Torlesse (Canterbury),and the Shag Point and Mataura unions (in the Otago and Southland industrial districts). Notice of proposed cancellation ot registration has also been issued in the case of the Denniston Engine-drivers Firemen Brakesmen, Carpenters and: Joiners, Blacksmiths, and Fitters' Union, winch is actively associated with the workings at the Denniston Mine.
