BIG ALLIANCE
' CONFERENCE EXPECTED TO FAIL MINERS NOT SUPPORTED. (UNITED MESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN-NCY/ ZEALAND CAISLB ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, 3rd June. The Labour correspondent- of the "Daily Express" says the much-boomed conference of the "Big Four" is -practically certain to fizzle, 'out, and end in the discomfiture of Mr. Cook, tho fireeating disciple of Lenin, who is secretary of the Miners' Federation. The executive of the National Union of Railwaymen has decided to have nothing to do with the alliance, the transporters will not support the scheme, and the engineers are divided. (Received oth June, noon.) LONDON, 4th June. The executives of eight trade union organisations met in London at the invitation of the Miners' Federation to discuss proposals for establishing a new labour alliance for mutual protection. Mr. Cook, of the Miners 1 Federation, in an impassioned speech, appealed for unity; but speakers generally were cautious and reluctant to bind themselves. Tho meeting resolved to appoint a committee, consisting of two representatives from each group of industries, to consider the suggestions submitted by the conference. Tho conference referred to, called for yesterday, is-between the miners', railwaymen's, .locomotive engineers'.- and transport workers' and eu^ineerin" unions, ' totalling 1,674.000 members to discuss the minors' proposal 'for an industrial alliance. It has been suggested that some unions wore inclined to lake a canny attitude, owing to the "Triple Alliance" crashin 1921. None of the unions committed their members at the preliminary conferences.
