"JOY-RIDING"
A MIDNIGHT ESCAPADE MOTOR MECHANIC. FINED £20. : "All went as merrily as a. marriage bell till the 'Upper Hutt was reached about 1 a.m., when the accuse ran the motor-car into a cart, and camo off second best," remarked Chief-Detective Kemp, in the Magistrate's Court to-day, when Frederick Martin Ryan, a -motor mechanic, aged 32, was charged with converting to his own use a motor-car valued at £700, the property of Charlotte Jane Sleightholme. He pleaded guilty. . The chief detective explained that the accused kept a small garage in Alpha street, immediately behind the complainant's hotel. On the evening of the 3rd June Byan, with four other men and two women, took the car from the garage and went for a "joy ride." As the result of the collision, 'the accused and some members of the party were slightly injured, and the motor-car was damaged to the extent of from £100 to £150. The following morning the car was-missed from the garage, and Eyan was missed from-his home. The matter was placed in -the hands of Detectives Cooper and Walker, who located the accused after making inquiries. "He ia a married man with five children, in poor circumstances," stated, the chief detective. '..*"■ The Magistrate (Mr.' C. R. Orr Walker, S.M.) imposed a fine of £20, to be paid at the rate of £2 a month. "That will keep it before his mind for ten Months," he observed.
