NOTES AND COMMENTS
Nominations for the classic events of practically all New Zealand clubs are due next Friday. ■-■,-' The Levin Club should have an excellent meeting to-morrow, for the acceptances are of good class, both numerically and in quality. The club has arranged a special train service both to and from the meeting 1. With Otaki form to guide them, backers should receive a good lead, but the Otaki. and Levin tracks are rather different in conformation, and it would not be surprising to find the fields and form rather tricky. One thing is certain, the provision of some very. interesting racing. Quite a good field is engaged in the Levin Handicap, Haurangi being a newcomer who was not seen out at Otaki. On his second to Quiescent at Hastings he will be a very hard horse lo beat. Megan must be given a chance, while Sanctuary should do better on this ■ track. If the course is at all firm, Sottano has .more than an outside chance, .[while Arch Salute is improving with every pee. If as well as he . was at .Hastings," Haurangi should be a good favourite. . ' ' >. The M'Donald Memorial Handicap has rather a peculiar field, with a mixed assortment of quality. Patiently handled, Lucius might run out the seven furJongs well, while Pronto has only to . be ridden with, judgment to have a greatchance. Benmure has speed, but there is a doubt whether he will see out seven ; furlongs: If lie could, in this company, ;there'"-would be no need to look any further. . ■ . : Eonmark has only to" run up to Otaki second-day form to make a bold showin° in the Ohau Hack Hurdles. ° Alabama, top weight in the-Welter Hack, was a little disappointing at Otaki, but he might be suited better by the Levin track. Salamis is another hkely to improve, while Bon March ran a good second to Star Shell on Wednesday at Otaki. Rangi gai . to hns to jump out well to be a tough proposition, but.unfortunately he seems very awkward at the barrier. Bon March and Salamis look a likely pair. Miss Odille stayed out six furlongs so Avell at Otaki that she seems well placed at 7.3 in the Mako Mako Hack Handicap. Alabama and Salamis are engaged in this, as well as the previous race. Gardenia ran two very useful races at Otaki, and looks a possibility. -A. large number of those in the Heaiherlea Hack Handicap are engaged earl.'.ier in the day. Tempean, Rangimoana, ;,and Miss Odille read best. Sasham and Luarne ' should dispute favouritism in the Maiden Race. . Chief interest "at Ellerslie to-morrow ■will be centred in the Great Northern Steeplechase,- in which Sir Roseberry seems certain to start a good favourite He won the Great Northern Hurdles so well that one cannot go past his name m the Steeplechase. Providing Passin' .through is not seriously affected by his fall, he should do well with 10.13, while ; Master Peter and Mary Bruce are a pair who look hkely to be prominent at the business end. .-Of. the rest, Tuki seems ..entitled to most consideration, and should run a good race. Master Peter would be more in favour if he had had experience of the Ellerslie hill', so that the final selection is left : Sir Roseberry : Mary Bruce, and Tuki. ■ Comical, "Vagabond, and Frisco Mail .all seem nicely placed in the Remuera Hurdles, although a mile and three-quar-ters may be a-little short for Vagabond Income should see a short price in the King George Handicap, while Doleful Ditty and Arch Amie should be suited oy the distance. In what looks like a certainty for a big field,, luck will'"have to be on the side of the winner. If the track has dried up at all. Chaplin -would appear in a class by himself ;in the Carbine Plate. Llewellyn and Bourn, although they fell on the first .day, ..should, do better in the Hunt Club : Cup-.to-morrow. " Transformer, Sleepy ::§°t a,nd; : Constellation-take the eye in -the Ranfurly Handicap, while Cureaform -does not appear at all harshly "treated" in I, the Panmure Hurdles. •
