The Department of Agriculture has received the following' cablegram, dated the 16th mst., from tho High Commissioner for New Zealand. London:—
BUTTER. Market slow and has a. downward tendency. Official quotations are:—
New Zealand.—Finest salted, loßs to 170s per cwfc (Is 6d to Is &id per.lb) ; exceptional, 172s per owt. (Is 6£d per lb); unsaltcd,' 176s to 180s per cwt (Is 6M to Is 7id per • 111; other qualities, 142s to 164s per cwt (1b 3id to Is sid per lb). Australian.—Sailed, 160s to 162s per cwt (Is Sd to Is sid per. lb); exceptional, 164s per cwt (Is sid per lb); other qualities, .140s. to 156s per cwt (Is 2d to Is 4id per lb) : unsalted, 164s to 168s per cwt (Is 5Jd to Is 6d per lb) ; other qualities, 150s to 160s per cwt (Is 4d to Is 5d per lb). •Argentine.—ls6s up to 164 a per cwt (Is 4£d to Is 5Jd per lb) ; other qualities. 152s to 154s per cwt (Is sid to Is sid per lb). Irish.—Salted. 170s per cwt (Is 6id per lb); unsalted, 176s to 178s per cwt (Is 63d to Is 7d per lb). . Siberian.—According to quality; 146s to 150s per cwt (Is 3Jd to Is 4d per lb). Danish—l Bos to 182s per cwt (Is 7d to Is 7id per lb). CHEESE. Market very quiet, and 94s being accepted for New Zealand to-day. Official quotations are: — English, finest farmers', stocks almost exhausted. 135 ato 140s per cwt (Is 2id ro 3s 3d per lb). New Zealand: Coloured and white, 94s to 95s per cwt (lOd per lb). . Australian: Finest and fine,, coloured, according to size, 86s to 92s per cwt (9d to 9gd par lb. Finest white, 90s to 92s per cwt (9id to 9Jd per lb). Shipments of New Zealand produce arrived this week per s.s. Somerset, Port Donison, and Hurunui. HEMP. Manila' declined early this week, and J' grade June-August shipments sold at £44 10s, but closed firmer, "J" grade May-July and June-August shipments being sold at £46 to £46 10s. Now Zealand maj-ket dull, and no business reported. Values of Highpoints, May-July shipmonls, £36 10s. There is a buyer for fair afloat at £34, but sellers quoto £34 10s Stocks of Now Zealand hemp in Great Britain on 30th April were 121 tons; against 21 tons for the same time last year. APPLES AND TALLOW. Apples.—Apples ex lonic nearly cleared. Prices are:—Cox's Orange, 15s to 255. per caso (according to condition); Jonathan, 16s to 17s 6d per case; Delicious, 16s to IBs per case; Dunn's Favourite, 17s to 18a per cose; London I'ippin (sonin wasty), 15a 6d lo 17s per case; Kinc .David, 16s per case; Hoover, 15s lo 16« | per case; Roma, 15s per case. Fruit ex Somerset in good condition. Sale just commencing, and market appears to bo firm. Tallow.—Market steadier. Demand is pood for spot and shipment. Present quotations are:—Mutton: Fino, 45s 6d to 46b pur cwt; fair to good, 44s to 45s 3d per cwt; dark to dull, 41s 6d io 42s 6d per owt. Boef: Sweet and (or) mixed, 44s ocj to 45i per cwt; fair to good, 42a 6d to 44s 6d per cwt; dark to dull, 39a lo 41a 6d per cwt. Mixed: Fair to good, 42s 6d to 44a 6d per cwt; dark to dull 39s to 41s 6d per cwt; gut, etc., 375• 6d to 39s per cwtWOOL. Salos closed on 14th instant, and during the last few days the demand improved considerably. Prices for merino hardoneel 5 per cent, and crossbred 7£ per cent, on average* . nbove opening rates, highest point being touched at the close, and serie» ending with good undertone. Mora optimistic feeling apparent in Bradford with regard tn' the' future. Averago closing rates were:— 60 to 64's (merino), Is 9d to 25.2 d per lb: 56's (super halfbred) Is 7d to Is lCd per lb; 48's (fine to crossbred). Is 5d lo Is 7d per lb- 44 to 46's. (medium, crossbred), Is 2d to Is 5d per lb; 36 to 40's (coarse crossbred) Is j Id to Is 3d per lb. Original catalogue contained 135,000 bales, but olforiny* were reduced to 70,000, of which 43 000 were sold, 24,000 going to Continental, 18,000 lo Home, and 1000 to American": trado.
