HIGH SPEED
A DANGER ON RIDDIFORD
STREET.
Allegations that motorists travelled at an excessive speed along Riddiford street were made at the meeting of house-, iiolders at Newtown School last evening. The school committee, in its report, drew attention to the increasing danger from fast-moving traffic on the main street, and with this lead Mr. A. Priddle urged that steps should be taken to have the traffic controlled. He pointed out that the speed was limited on the Hutt roadji where the danger of accident was not nearly so great as on Riddiford street, with its many cross-roads. He alleged that motor vehicles travelled along that street; at rates of from thirty to forty miles per hour. There was urgent need of control,, particularly as the liability of serious accident was made much greater by reason ot the fact that some 800 pupils were liberated from the main 'school during the day. He moved: "That this meeting of householders views with concern the high speed of motor traffic.on Riddiford street, and asks the authorities to take steps immediately to reduce the rate o£ speed, and also requests that more frequent visits be paid by traffic inspectors."
A motorist among the householders present congratulated the headmaster and staff upon the way in which the children had been trained to take care in crossing the- roads. H& suggested that the Automobile Association, which was doing much good work in guarding against danger, might be requested to assist by erecting sign-posts. It was pointed out that signs had been up for a long time, but they evidently did not act as a warning to some mo-" torists. Surprised to learn of this, the motorist present at the meeting was com T pelled to agree with those who considered that the particular signs were of little use. At the same time, he believed that the high-speed travelling complained of was not- confined to niotorists.
The motion was carried, and it was decided that copies be forwarded to the Commissioner of Police and to the City Council.
