CIVIC ORGANISATION

TO THE EDIIOKi ; Sir,—The results of the recent miini-' cipal election emphasise the necessity of organisation of the moderate arid business interests in Wellington. It has been pointed out that if 700 of the. votes cast in favour of Mr. Norwood had been allotted^ to Mr. Chapman the result of the Mayoral contest would have been changed. It iiiay also be emphasised that the Labour Party has only to secure 10QO .of the votes recently accorded to Civic League candidates to enable it td place on 1 the council at least a working majority of Labour members.. This remarkable result has been achieved by the Labour Party by nioans of thorough organisation; It is true _ that during the recent Mayoral election the Civic.League has done a gadd deal of work, but unfortunately the bulk of. this w6i-k was concentrated within the last .two weeks.

What is required is an alert and permanent organisation that Will have all preparatidna: made well in advance. Some_people are nialnng the mistake of thinking that because orily'twd' Labour members were elected to the City Council the Labour Party has made little progress. A study of the figures will reveal the fact that at least eight cr nine other Labour members pblled vote's between 7000 and 9000* showing that all they require is a little more support ttoiii tho ptibliu arid Wellington will have .'a' Labour council. ■

■ It may be contended that the business interests have in the Civic League an organisation to foster their interest in municipal affairs, Unfortunately, however, this league is proving in many respects ineffective,:.and. there :is~6bvN ous.< need, for reconstruction/''lf itrHVe're" possible to convert the existing body into a-really virile organisation in municipal politics the pbsitidh of the moder-lal-e^sectjoh of the community'would be made 1, more secure. - ■■ •'■•'.'. ,

This is it problem which needs to be tafojn up immediately. If it is left over \nthout solution' until the approach of the- next elections the organisatidn of the opposition -will probably have improved to such an extent that the Civic .League will be unable to secure the return of its candidates.—l anij etc., ;• .
