SHIFT ENGINEERS
Proceedings in Conciliation Council before Mr. W. Newton (Commissioner) yesterday in regard to \va S es and conditions for shift engineers employed by municipal bodies and freezing companies proved unsuccessful. The parties were the Weilmgton Amalgamated Engineering Union on the one side and the Wellington Cky Council, Napier Borough Council, and a number of freezing companies on the other. The question as to whether the union was within its rights in taking action on behalf of such a class of worker had been previously submitted to the Arbitration Court and answered in the affirmative. The parties were represented by Messrs. F. H. Sanderson. F D Sladen, S. Dickson, and W. Grenfell (for the employers); and. Messrs. W. Bromley, F. Eglmton, and J. T. Grange (for the union). • .; , , ; , . . Mr. Sanderson stated that the freezing companies had been negotiating with the Institute of Marine Engineers with the object of entering into an a<n-ee-ment under the Labour Disputes Investigation Act, and all that could be done m the present case was to refer the dispute direct to the Arbitration Court Mr. Bromley admitted that the case could not very well go on, although he regretted_ that something could not ba done to improve the position of the men concerned.
The council decided that the claims be referred to the Court without recommendation, but expressed the hope that before the Court sat the parties would mnt C°me B°me amicable agree-
