COMPETITIONS

CONFERENCE OF SOCIETIES

FEDERATION TO BE FORMED.

The first conference of Competitions Societies was opened' in the Council Chamber at the Town Hall to-day. Mr. B. J. Wesney (of Invercargill) was elected chairman, and there was a good attendance of delegates, all societies being represented or accounted for," with the exception of Dunedin. . fc Mr. J. W. Carr, president of the Wellington Competitions Society, said there was_ no longer any need to feel any anxiety regarding the success of competitions. Their only anxiety was as to how they could properly and adequately meet the demand of the public. In Great Britain a Competitions Federation had been formed, and much good had resulted. It might be advisable to form a similar body in New Zealand. One advantage that might accrue would be the development of choral singing. The Mayor (Mr. E. A.. Wright) extended a welcome to the delegates to the conference. The object of the gathering, he understood, was to form some sort of Dominion'<organisation in order that they might work together in various matters of importance as' far as the societies were concerned. For instance, they could have the same judges, and could also arrange dates' in order that the various festivals should not clash. In Wellington they had been fortunate enough to have almost enthusiastic committee, and although the beginning had been small there had been a wonderful development. The competitions m Wellington had been the means of developing latent talent among the young People of the city. That in itself should be quite sufficient to stamp tie society as progressing and as a body n^ %vas oin S £ood in the community. The remarks of the Director of Education (Mr. J. Caughley) are reported'under a separate heading.
