An ugly situation has developed in the Bloemfontein native location. An attempt by the police to interfere with the native beer-drinking was resisted by a mob of 4000 natives. The police were compelled to retire after a native had been killed and several police wounded. Subsequently the local defence force waa called out and picketed the streets, fearing a native attack oh the town.

The natives maintained a menacing attitude, but the Minister of Justice stated in the Assembly that the situation was easier. The ..Railway Regiment and the police are standing by.
