EXTENDING A PARK

NELSON, 20th. February. A~ northerly gale, accompanied by heavy rain, blew here last night. The a.s. Nikau, with the Wanganui cricketers on board, left for Wellington, but after getting some distance down the coast had to put back, and did 'not get away for some hours, leaving again early, this morning. • It is reported that a large poplar tree from the Dioscesan property at Bishopdale was brought down by the gale, and laid across Waimea road. Hop gardens and orchards suffered damage. The Coast telegraph lines were broken down, and the cable wires affected to some extent. A very fine launch owned and built by Messrs. F. Simmonds and W. Hutson. Wellington yachtainen, arived here a tew days ago from Wellington. Leaving there on Saturday afternoon, the trip was made in 17 hours in perfectly calm weather, which continued throughout the passage. On nearing the South Island the yachtsmen found the glass was falling, and instead of cruising round D'Urville Island as -was intended, came on to Nelson, and were fortunate in doing so, as they were harboured here when the gale came. Mr. Simmonds is a native of Nelson, having been born at Waimea West, and has been visiting his former home. The launch c. a r s. b«e.tL.named the-Wai-iti, after the Wai-iti Eiver. She is 28ft long by 9ft beam, and has a Diesel engine, also made by the owners. The vessel is complete in. every detail. The run across, Mr. Hutson stated, cost 10s for fuel and 5s tor oil. The owners intend cruising in the Sounds before returning to Wellington. : ■ ■j.r.'^- PP c Jubilee Singers are visiting the Nelson district, and have given two concerts, in the city at the Marsden .nail. Last evening's concert was. well attended, and the audience was very demonstrative in its .appreciation of the excellent entertainment given. ,■ ' - Up to the present about 6000 applications have been received by the Registrar of Electors ■ (Mr. Mitchell) for enrolment,, about 1500 of which-are inioraial.
Councillor D R. Edwards (a member of the fern of F. andD. Edwards, Ltd.)i and Mrs, ESwards intend leaving Nelson ne ? t month on a visit to Great Britain. Councilloi- Edwai-ds has been a member of the Nelson City Council during' the past four years, and lias proved a most energetic and vigilant councillor, and one who, during the whole period, worked strenuously ( 3 nd with success) for the advancement of the city and district.
