WORK FOR HUMANITY

, Dumg the war it was popularly believed that the advent of peace would see a world reformed as if by some v miracle. It has since 'been realised that reformation cannot be achieved in a moment, that it is possible only by steady.-self-sacrificing effort. " In the organisation of this effort excellent work is being dove by the*. Eed Cro ss bociety. The humanitarian spirit of the Society in war-time is now inspiring its campaign of peace-time activity. It aims at the promotion of physical wellbeing, and it gives direct and valuable relief to the sick and sufieni«g4 But,its activity is not restricted to relief. It seeks also to educate the people and to encourage unselfish work' for humanity. In the Junior Red Cross movement especially a weadevful 4eld of eu-

deavour has been opened up. Wellington has taken the lead in promoting this activity in New Zealand, and has discovered boundless, opportunities. But there is the difficulty of finance. Voluntary workers are doing their beßt, but if they are now to seize the many opportunities presented they must have funds. It is hoped, by an appeal to people who should be interested, to enrol a great number of annual contributors. In our news columns to-day we publish some particulars of tho work which the Society is doing and that which it hopes to do. — Study of that statemeut should convince any man that the Society has but one fault—that it has been overmodest in proclaiming its record.
