INSTITUTE BEAT V.M.C.A.
Institute had: progressed so well in their reply to Y.M.U.A.'s total of 198 that for the second day. of the match they were confronted wi^h a somewhat easy task. Only 33 runs were required for .'a first innings' lead and eight wickets were in hand. Conditions for the' resumption Were ideal, and' Institute made good use. of the batsmen's wicket at the Basin Reserve, though some individual visits to, the .crease were productive of little. Burt, who had passed the 50 mark on the first day, and Bell, who .'had carried his bat without seorJiigi continued Institute's first innings. Proceedings were on the cautious side, bufc the score was "gradually improved. Bell was dismissed with only two to his iiccount, but Burt had made enough to place his side: within 13 runs of the i'.M.CA. score. '. Foley's association with burt practically settled the issue, their fourth wicket partnership, advancing Institute's score ,to 223. It was Burt's -wicket which fell on this occasion, a catch.by,the, wicketkeeper being 'respon-" sible. Burt had batted soundly, though he had an escape or two, and a big portion of his \B3 runs'came from attractive strqkes. Poley had a strong hand in the further advance on the opposing tolly,/and he' saw 'five players coiue and go while 49 runs were put on. It seem-' ,ed that Institute had no tail, but Condliffe,'th'e'"last"ipan, proved a very able partner, for; Foley/ , Buns came fairly, freely, and th© 300 mark was passed. With 325' runs Institute declared. It was, now Y.M.C.A.'s business to avert an innings defeat, and little trouble was experienced in playing out time—a matter of about. 100' minutes'. Six wickets' nvere lost, but the scoring was good anc fast, Sugden, Lamason, Haughey, and Virtue all batting well. Institute won on the first innings by 127 runs. Details:—- ■.. ■■ •'.'.,: ' ■ ...
