A SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL

Excellent conditions, so essential for the success of open-air swimming, were in evidence last night at the carnival held by the Thorndon Club at the Municipal iiaths in Murphy street, and a : large attendance watched with interest the keenly-contested events. All the races were got off smartly, and the progress of the swimmers could bo fairly plainly seen in the light of the brilliant electrics. It is intended later to instal riioro lamps for the convenience of night swimmers. Taken as a whole, the standard of efficiency was good, but it was noticeable that very few of the competitors utilised the correct turn at the end of each lap, by which means they might have shortened their times considerably. Tho Wellington Centre's 440 yds intermediate championship resulted in a 'runaway victory for W. Cameron (Thorndon). The. winner established a length lead soon after the start, and thereafter maintained his position, gradually drawing ahead His time of 6min 27 l-ssec stamps him as a swimmer out of the ordinary. B. M'lvor (Wellington) was second nearly two lengths behind. Maramii were the winners of the Walker and Hall Flying Squadron race in which five men from each club competed, swimming 100 yds each. There .were several exciting sprints, one being made by Claridge (Olympia), in which ho gained some yards on his opponents. JI 'Hardy, Maranui's last man, only touched by a couple of yards.
