WARNING TO PUBLIC
AGAINST OPTIMISM.
LONDON, 2nd February. The "Daily Mail," editorially, warns the public against optimism as regards Canon Alexander's statement on . the subject of St. Paul's dome, and says that eminent architects and engineers support the city surveyor's view that the building is unsafe, but they do not care to cay so publicly. According to the article the nation has a right to expect the Government to intervene to ensure the safety of the public, and the preservation of the cathedral as a national, not a denominational, sanctuary. The dean and chapter's responsibility is too great, and the conflict of export opinion so sharp that the former ehould appeal to the Government. St. PaaVa /Qeanwhile ehould be closed.
Canon Alexander, treasnrer of St. Paul's, stated* ihnc the alternative lo repairing the pillars of St. Paul's, namely, trying to replace the piers, would ■be most dangerous. / He was Assured by the highest engineering and architectural authority in the oountry that an attempt to rebuild the piers would probably mean the removal of the dome, or part of it, and would be so risky that no responsible architect or engineer would be likely to undertake it.
