BACK COUNTRY LANDS
REVERTING TO SECOND , GROWTH INVESTIGATIONS PROGRESSING. A statement was'issued by the Minister of Lands (the Hon. A. D. M'Leod) yesterday in regard to the progress being made by the Special Committee wmch was set' up to inquine into the deterioration of certain .lands extending from the Wanga'nui River to Raclan, and an area on the East uuast, embracing' Waioeka and adjacent country. v Mr. M'Leod stated that the committee had almost completed its investigations, and would meet in Wellington next week m order to formulate its report and recommendations. The committee would give its views as to/the cause or causes lor the deterioration which had taken place, and would make recommendations as to the concessions which should be granted, and the means which should be adopted to allo# for the more'successful occupation of the lands. It was recognised that .there were various causes for the depreciation, but one of the greatest problems appeared to be the "second growth"; and this phase of the problem would receive the special attention of the committee. In addition to inspecting a large proportion of the areas affected, the Commission had taken evidence in various centres, and.had collected a large amount of data on which to deliberate and make its recommendations.
Regarding the inspection of areas in Waioeka and adjacent localities,. Mr. M'Leod stated that much the same conditions obtained in regard to these lands a^ those being inquired into by the larger committee on the West Cqas't, but in addition, the East Coast committee would advise as to what extent the at present unopened Crown land could be successfully developed, having regard to physical and climatic conditions, cost of roading, and other iconsiderations. Mr. M'Leod stressed the necessity of considering' also the effects'brought about by the deforesting of broken and steep heavy forest land, and stated that this question would also be dealt with by the committee.
