Sir,—May 1,-through the medium of your paper, inquire what the position is with regard to 'the discharge of offensive matter into our harbour?. Have the companies a permit, and, if so, when i do the . permits expire T As a constant traveller on the, Hutt railway, I consider the time has arrived when the discharge of this disgustingly filthy matter into'pur beautiful harbour should cease. >In any case, the authorities should at once insist on the drains ing kept in repair.. At present filth v poured from a damaged drain on to the shore instead of being carried well out to sea.-., What, should be a most delightful train journey is marred by the" abominable smells met with along the shore. Trusting-something will be done at once to mitigate this nuisance.—l am, etc., ■'■■ ■ ' BELMONT. ' . Bth January.
