AMERICAN ATHLETES

QUESTION OF EXPENSES.

In regard to the proposed tour of Australia and New Zealand by the crack American athletes. Paddock and Murchison, the following cablegram has been received by the N.Z.A.A.A. from Mr. George Krogness, who is the Dominion's representative in the States:—' 'Replying to your terms, Kubien telegraphed that Murchison insists upon New Zealand and Australia pay expenses from New York to Japan, which are less than their return expenses to New York, Japan defraying expenses Europe. What shall we reply? This is very urgent." Owing to the fact that nearly all the members of the N.Z.A.A.A. executive council are out of town, no. action can at present be taken in the matter. Publication of fc'-.o cablegram was authorised by the one delegate who was known to be in ;the city.

In a letter to Mr. J. Pevmain, secretary of the Palmerston North War Memorial Committee, the High Commissioner for New Zealand, Sir James Allen, says that Palmerston North has every reason to be proud of its war memorial. Sir James Allen recently visited the artist's studio and he- details the progress being made with the work. Sir James writes as follows: "I have pleasure in informing you that a few days ago I visited the studio of Mr. Blundstone and inspected the completed bronze figure for the Palmevston North war memorial. In my opinion, it is a most dignified and impressive figure, and I consider that Mr. Blundstono has put his best v*rk into it. The palm leaves on the staff held by the figure and the crown at the top of the staff are in gold, , and make a. fine relief and contrast to the bronze. Them were three Ne>v Zealand ladies present at the studio when I visited it, and they concurred in my opinion that "this treatment improved ' the effect of the 1 memorial.".
