GAY CROWDS ON FORESHORE.

It was not long after the weather cleared away yesterday morning before the Fetone, beach became a busy centre and when the gala opened later in the day ttere was a very large crowd in holiday mood. , All sorts of things were houseS bright with bunting, and in the evening with the assistance of the new lighting. Bide shows of. all. sorts, as well as a dance ball, did great business. The arrangements were almost wholly in" the hands of the Beautifying Society, and they-had a splendid programme which quite completely filled the day and ovening. ■ Following are the results of the various compotitiona and aquatic events • io£o^ d?,,SwimroinS Eace. girls under .13.—Miss Christie, 1; Miss Wilson 2 100 Yards Swimming Race, girls'under 16.—Miss M. Rowing.—Senior Fours : First heat, Monks (s), Cropp, J. M'Laughlin, Palamountam (bow), 1; C. -M'Laughlin (s), T. Slinn, Maude, W. Wilson /bow) 2 Final—Monks (s) Cropp, J. M'Laughhn, Palamountain (bow), 1; Burridge fe) Hickson, Dickens, Rodgers (bow) 2. Juniors Fours.—Collins (s), Ken- Collette, Wilde (bow), 1; Home (s), Forde, Heeney, Barnes (bow), 2. Very close race, won by half a length. In tho yacht race for 18-footers a close race resulted between Wonder and Irex over a three ami a half mile course. The course was from the wharf, through tha Gap at Somes Island, across to Lowry Bay and back to the wharf. Wonder, on scratch, kept well, up on her opponent, who had smin handicap, and finally won by a mera Sseo.

The gala continues on-the beach until New Year's Day, and further attractions will be presented between then and now
