The Manawatu Gorge Road Board of Control lias received its balance-sheet back from the Auditor-General with a "tag" disallowing items for £6 5« and £1, being expenses incurred in providing members with lunch where meetings were held at the gorge. The Aud-itor-General requires a refund of the amounts immediately, and the secretary has been instructed to make a levy on the members. The Borough Council received 35 applications for the pceition of overseer, and has reduced the number to three, ■who will interview the council at a special meeting to be held in January. Mr. L. R. Dale, of the local railway staff, has been transferred to Auckland, and his position here will bo filled by Mr. J. T. Dwyer, of Auckland. The Borough Council proposes to purchase from Mr. J. A. Russell an area of 38 acree, situated on James line, for a cemetery. The price to be paid for the land is £2500, and the expenses will amount to about £4000. The council therefore proposes to place before the ratepayers a proposal to borrow £6500 for this purpose. Mr. K. W. Dalrymple has donated 15 acres of land at. the Manawatu Heads to the Foxton Harbour Board. Mrs. Mary Emeline Smith, who passed away in Palraerston North this week, aged 89 years, was the widow of the late Major "Valentine Smith, who died about 30 years ago. She was born in Picton, New South Wales, and after her marriage came to New Zealand with her husband and took up their residence in Wellington. Major Smith had, as an officer of the regular forces, been stationed in New Zealand in 1842, and during the Maori War he again entered the service. Major and Mrs. Smith resided at times in the Auckland and Taranaki districts, and at the termination of hostilities Major Smith took up a sheep run in the Wairarapa. He was for a number of years officer-in-charge of the Wairarapa Defence Forces. On the death of her husband Mrs. Smith came to Palmerston North. She is survived by two sons, Mr. Percy Smith, of Palmerston North, and Mr. Harold Smith, solicitor, of Pahiatua. ■ .

Stevens,' G. I. M'Gregor, J. R. Wood, J. A. Nash, M.P., A. S. Faire, R. Martin, and J. J. O'Shea. At a subsequent meeting of the council Mr. H. L. Young was re-elected president, Mr. H. E. Pacey vice-presi-dent, and Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., honorary treasurer.

The speaker at the breaking-up ceremony in connection with the Girls' High School was Mrs. E. W. Kane, of Wellington, who spoke on the sphere of women in modern times.
