PACIFIC MAILS
CONTRACTS FOR FASTER
SERVICES.
New contracts for the Pacific mail service have been signed between the Union Steam Ship Company and the Government, providing that.the voyages between Auckland and Vancouver, and vice versa, and between Wellington and San Francisco, and vice versa, shall be eighteen days. This reduces the time °on the Vancouver run by one day, and on the San Francisco service by three days. The average time mails now take to reach London from New Zealand is 30 days as against 33 heretofore. The contracts for both the Vancouver and San Francisco services provide for four-weekly dispatches from Auckland and Wellington respectively ; and the time-tables are arranged so that the two services alternate, giving a regular fortnightly service from and to New Zealand.
The subsidies payable under the contracts, which have a term of five years, are the same as before, namely, £20,000 per annum for the Vancouver service and £25,000 per annum for the San Francisco service.
