' ; At the present time, long hours ar« being worked by those engaged in' installing reticulation, cervices that tka power may be availed of at the earliest possible date, and, if the service lines can be inspected and certified in time, power f"r; street' lighting may be turned on in the Petone, Lower Hutt, and Eastbourne - areas: by Christmas Eve. Already a large- number, of dwelling* and business .premises ..have been connected up tip .the service lines, and may be, served with power assoon as testa are carried, out, and the' main power lines and individual installations passed by the Government inspectors.- ■ The. lighting standards are not yet provided with their globes,' but this final: section of the work can be carried out in very short;time when the. long detail of re-ticulation-work is completed, and th« line, transformed etc., passed as ready for duty. '•'. '- ;. ■'.'':' • ■ . . ', The. lighting. of. so. large a distrct by electricity is not an every-day event—: though it will be.once the power is-dn —and it is probable that a suitable ceremony will; mark the throwing of ths 'first switch. V Mangahao power,' it is expected, will reach the city in the ' latter" part ' of January or in February, the city carrying on in the meantime with its present supply from the Evans Bay. station. _ As far as the machinery for handling .the /power (frequency .changers, transformers, and soon) in 'the city, is concerned, Wellington could take'its shar» ft the,, new. supply almost at once, butf thecable line from the Government sub«tation at Khandallah to the city substation, is not yet completed.: The first of the big steel towers on the IJhandallah T pityhne is completed and others ar« m course of construction, the nnderground cable alon^ the Hutt road to inorndon, has now reached a point well on.the city side of Kaiwarra. The city length of this cable or cables, between Jervois quay and Thorndon, is complete, so that not so rery much more remains to be done in this regard. ; . . , ■.-. - The Corporation will for » few njontha ■P.??' lts,P° w«r from the Government I through the meter," paying for what I w actually consumed, but later "block power, wdl ; be purchased,- the councU contracting to take so much power during each twenty-four hours.
