The "Kiwi," the mascot of the New Zealand Rugby' football team, has been attracting much attention during the tour at Home. A politician speaking at one function in honour of the A!l Blacks said that he had discovered that the bird was compensated for absence of wings by fleetness of foot, .and he could understand why it was tha mascot of the footballers. He also found 'that it was a bird of nocturnal habit, but ha did not see where that applied if it were true that the team "ordered hardboiled eggs at 7 o'clock every morning." Of an amount of £2,376,367 spent on discharged soldiers by the Repatriation Department, up to 30th November last, £1,960,548 was by way of loan, and £1,478,050, or over 75 per cent., has been repaid. A total of 6418 loans for £1,130,548, was granted to start men in business, and 16,296 loans for £788,799 were made for the purchase of furniture, etc., to men just married. The number of men trained in new trades or professions was 7553.. and the coSt was £403,549. 'Employment was found for 28,756 discharged soldiers, and 16d was the average cost per demobilised soldier for employment sustenance. Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd., intimate that Wednesday, the 10th instant, is the last discount day for raonthly account*, —Adrt. • . ■'.
