LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present : Mr. W. T. Strand' (Mayor), and Councillors A. M'Bain, W. Meldrum, J. Mitchell, L. T. Wat-kins, and A. J. Hobbs. The Town Clerk was instructed to give the Wa'ipukurau Borough Council information in regard to the building of the local Plunket room and dental clinic. Messrs. Johnston and Beere asked the council to deal with the exemption of the old Wainui road from the requirements of the Public Works Act regarding street widening. The engineer was instructed to prepare a plan and forward it to the proper authorities. Mr. H. Greig and others asked the council to report on the question of water supply and sewerage service for the Melling hills, and it was decided that the engineer prepare a comprehensive plan of water and sewerage services for this district. Mr. T. Wilson' and others complained of the storm water off the road running under thejr properties on the Main road, opposite the Railway Station. It was decided to reply that the road would shortly be permanently surfaced, and the trouble remedied. The Mayor undertook.that in the meantime he would endeavour to get the Railway Department to do something to alleviate the trouble. Un the motion of the Mayor it was decided that the council combine with Petone in a deputation to the Hospital Board to ask that a maternity home be immediately erected in the Hutt Valley The Mayor and Councillor Watkins were appointed the council's representatives. ■ The engineer, Mr. E. J. Barnes, reported that the grading plant was now idle, and that the men were transferred* to footpath work. The footpath work was progressing satisfactorily, about one and three-quarter miles being ready for tarring, which would be proceeded with at once. In regard to keeping the expenditure within the estimates, he assured the council that there was no need for anxiety as all the works under his control would be completed, within the estimates. It was decided, on the motion of Councillor :.Hobbs, to give the tarred portion of the Main road a fresh coat of tar, which would relieve the Hutt Road Board of the necessity of permanently surfacing it this season.
