SETTLEMENT INEVITABLE
STARTLING EVIDENCE AT WHARF COLLAPSE INQUIRY.

AUCKLAND, 27th November. The principal witness at the Wharf Commission's inquiry to-day was Mr. Hamer, of the Harbour Board, who was re-examined as to the movement in the wall alongside the wharf, and in reference to a letter sent by him from America concerning the construction uf the wharf,: in which he expressed the opinion that it was inevitable that a settlement would occur. Captain Sergeant, harbourmaster, described as absolute buncombe the theory of one witness that the tide flowed through the tide deflector.- 0. \V. Schultz, formerly a shipmaster, condemned the system of tide deflectors as tending to silt up the harbour. . William Jones, motor-lorry driver, said that ha was tipping material at the end of the wharf -when it started to move. He tipped the load and went for his life, running the lorry over the sinking structure. There was no noise at all.
