EDUCATION SYSTEM
CONFERENCE CONCLUDED,
The conference between education board chairmen and secretaries and officers of the Education Department concluded yesterday.
Addresses were delivered by Dr. Ada Paterson (chief school medical officer), Dr. Phillips (Christchurch), and Dr. Truby King. The value and importance of open-air classrooms were stressed and some indication was given of beneficial results that had been produced by remedial classes conducted at the schools.
The success •of the school dental clinics was commended, and a motion, was carried urging the Government to provide for the extension of facilities for dental clinics, including the provision of travelling motor clinics for remote districts. . .
Other matters considered included the payment of subsidies on voluntary contributions raised for school purposes. The chairman emphasised that such restrictions as were placed on subsidies did not imply any intention to depart from the general principle of granting £1 for every £1 raised locally. At the conclusion of the conference the chairman thanked members for their attendance, and stressed the value of such meetings. On the motion of Mr. S. G. Smith, seconded by Mr. Wallace, a • motion was carried expressing warmest appreciation of. Mr. Caughley's conduct of the conference.
