EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. >The monthly meeting of the Eastbourne Borough- Council was held last) evening under the chairmanship of the Mayor (Mr. H. W. Shortt), the following also being present:—Councillors H. J. Levy, A. Walker, E. A. Dawson, H. M. Jones, S. F. Fisher, and J. Laing. The Town Clerk, in his report to the council, stated .that the erection of houses on vacant land belonging to the council -was a sound proposal, but owing to a great deal of urgent business on hand, he recommended that the'question be left over for decision until the new council is elected in April. ■ ' A lengthy discussion took place in regard to breaches of. the building bylaws, and it was decided that the council could not see its way to condone any breanches that might occur. Cases in point were mentioned, and the council decided that if fresh applications were received the Works Committee would consider them. It was decided that the transfer of the lease of the Pavilion from Mrs. W. R. Entwistle to Mr.'Dustin be granted, and ;tho lessee was appointed to collect fees'_ in connection with the municipal tennis courts. • The Mayor said that ho wished to voice his appreciation to the Wellington Harbour Board, which body had always shown them consideration. The board had met them in regard to spring piles and chafing pieces on the wharf, which had been fixed and were now in good working order. He moved that a letter be sent to them in regard to the matter. The motion was carried. The traffic, manager reported that 52,941 passengers had been carried during October on the ferry service—Muritai 31,940, Duchoss. 16,241, Cobar 4760 —as against 63,917 for a similar period last year. The reduction in numbers carried .was attributed to weather during the week-ends. A report stated that several picnics were being arranged for, and the Gear Meat Company had already arranged to go to Day's Bay early in Decembor. Evening charters were 1 also .being arranged. ; . , The Muribai Tennis Club was granted the use of the borough tennis courts for a tournament, which is to be held on fouiy days commencing on Friday, 26th December (Boxing Day), The charges aro to he the lowest "according to the schedule, providing this is not less than Is 6d per court per hour. Play is to take place from 10 a.m. till 5 p.m. An increased scale of charges was adopted for the use of the Council Chambers.
