The above cablegram confirms the .provisional contract reported oh 6th September to have been signed for the construction of 40 miles. :of standard gauge railway for-the Tbnga'riro Timber Company to- connect Lake Taupo with the Main Trunk line: The line 'will pass up the' Upper Wanganui Gorge on an easy grade, and after reaching the summit the a-ailway will descend to Lake Taupo -and terminate at a point about four miles north of Tokaanu It will take,'admittedly, the best route into the southern end of the Hot Lakes district. It will give access'tp-the ex-' tensive -and valuable forests 'of the region, which will then become available for the sawmiller.; It is not the intention of the.Tongariro Timber Co., howeTeJ'.._to enter'into competition with established milliric; companies. It will supply them ■ with raw material, allowing them to do the milling and to arrange for the distribution and sale- of the timber-.
