WHY MECCA FELL

IBN SAUD EXPLAINS

THE FAILURE OF HUSSEIN[

WAHABIS' CAMPAIQN FOR FREEDOM. '■

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPIRIQHT.) (REUTER'S TELEBRAM.) (Received 24th October, 11 a.m.) JERUSALEM, 23rd October. Ibn Sand, Sultan of Nejd, has telegraphed to the Moslem Supreme Council, which offered to mediate between Ibn Saud and the Hedjaz, saying he is grieved that the offer of mediation arrived too late. He declares that for the last seven years he has done his utmost to conciliate King Hussein and attain peace and concord, but in vain. King Hussein's attitude became haughtier and more obstinate, and his proclamation proved that he was aiming at the disruption of Ibn Saud's territory. Hussein, for six years, prevented the Wahabis making pilgrimages to Mecca, and was unable to maintain the security of Mecca and Medina, and to guarantee the safety of Moslem pilgrims. The sole purpose of the Wahabis was to tranquillise the situation in tKe Hedjaz, and to ensure the future of their country. They desired ah administration of the Hedjaz which would guarantee the rights of all Moslems, provide comfort for ■ pilgrims, and remove .all injustices and grievances.
