PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY
ANNUAL MEETING.
The annual • meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society was'held last night, Mr. P. S. Morgan presiding over'a large attendance. V. 7, ' The report set out" the number of papers that had-been read during the year. Eighteen new members had been elected, while there had been four resignations. The1 institute had Informed the society that the Government had decided to continue!the research grants, and the following members of, the society had received research grants during' the . year :^-;W. J.; Phillips,: forT an investigation in "The Life Histories of A Tew Zealand; Fresh Water Fishes"; E. K. Lomas, for a research upon "An Attempt to-Measure- the Intelligence of School Children." V The report was adopted. ' ' The'following officers were elected for the ensuing, year:—President;- Mr:,:A; C. ■; Gifford; Messrs. F. W. Furkert and •&! Hamilton; secretary• and treasurer,. W. J.. Phillipps ; committee, Dr. C. A. Cotton (chairman of geological' section), • Mr. i H.--> Sladden (chairman of'> -technological section), Mr. J. P. Maxwell ... {chairman of astronomical section), -Mr.' P. S. Morgan (retiring president), Mr. W. R. B. Oliver (retiring vice-pfesideut), Dr. Marsden, Dr.":J.-Ji'..'i:hompsoa, Mr. E. K. Lomas, Professor Kirk, Mr. G. V. Hudson, and Mr. A. Gibbs.--- . -- Dr. C. Farr, Professor of JPhysics. at Canterbury College, delivered an instruc-" -tive address on "The Structure of the Atom." He made special''reference to the great work done by Sir Ernest Buth-: erford in connection with.this subject.
