MARANUI CLUB'S ,ACTIVITIES,
The thirteenth annual report of the Maranui Surf and Life-Saving Club, to be presented at the annual meoting, shows that the membership ab the present time is 104, made up as follow: 5 life members, 50 active members, 49 non-active members. Twenty-three members were struck off the club's roll as defaulters during tho season, and 25 new members -were elected. The rooms aro now completely furnished and brought up to date as far as the present conditions will permit, and the comfort of members is catered for as much as possible. The club is well provided in life-saving and athletic gear. It will not bo necessary to spend any money under this heading for some time to come. Tho club teams have boen very successful during the season in the intor-club competitions. Out of six competitions entered for, tho club won four, which reflects great credit on the instructors. Tho club's greatest achievement during tho season was the winning of the Nelson Shield, the New Zealand Life-Saving Championship, and tho team aro to bo congratulated on their splendid performance. The next competition for this trophy takes places nt New Brighton early in February, and as keen competition for this trophy is expected, members aro earnestly requested to co-oper-ate with tho deputy captains in commencing training classes as soon as the season opens. With a view to furthering the interest in competitive swimming amongst tho club members, the committee has procured a course of theoretical _ and practical instruction .in swimming by one of America's foremost tiainers. This will bo placed in the capable hands of Mr. Ralph Smith and will be available for all club members. As the various handicap races for tho George Cup will be competed for at different times during the season, this should result in a marked improvement in swimming form of members. The total awards gained since the formation ol the club aro: Elementary certificates, 72; proficiency certificates, 72; bronze medallions, 76; awards of merit, 15; lion, teacher's certificate, 2; lion, instructor's certificate, 14 ; surf medallions, 22; making a total of 273 awards. Mention is also made in the report of the launching of the surf boat. Tho balancesheet shows the club to be in a sound financial position.
