BOWEN STREET TRAM
THE ALTERNATIVE ROUTE FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS TO BE MADE. The Tramways Committee of the City Council reported last evening that they | had received a communication from the Prime Minister with regard to the proposed Sydney street tram deviation, suggesting that better results from the tramway point of view would be obtained from an alternative route in the vicinity. "Some months a^o," the report con-, tinued, the general manager submitted a report on this alternative proposal, but as the information on which the estimate of the cost was based was somewhat meagre, it is now proposed by him to make a more careful investigation of the suggested alternative route in conjunction with the City Engineer. It is hoped therefore that the committee- will be in a posiion to submit a report to the next meeting of the council.'' Councillor Lnckie asked whether the route suggested would involve a tunnel. ' The Mayor: "Yes, that is so. but that need not necessarily be fatal." A question was "asked by Councillor Aston as to when the John street line was likely to be opened. As far as he could see very little progress was being made, in fact, "progress" did not appear quite'the right word to use. The Mayor replied that, he was not able at the moment to state when the line would be open.. i
