LADIES' TOURNAMENT

Tho ladies' hockey tournament was concluded . this .afternoon in beautiful weather, before a. large, attendance, and on a fast ground, when Southland {hold-' ers) defeated Poverty Bay in the final by 4 goals to 1. The -winners gave a fino exhibition of tho game, passing with judgment and attacking and defending equally well. Southland were the cleverer team of the two, and though Poverty Bay fought hard they met superior com-, bination. .","'"..! ; ' ... 1 j..-.' -,' ■ In the first spell; although the'iganie was fairly even, Southland got a lead bf'3-to nil, gdals being scored by Misses ■Melvin,- Ashley, and Bell; Miss Ashley's goal-was a particularly brilliant ono. Poverty Bay had a fair share .of the at-^ tacking, but; the defence was: too solid. Well in the "second spell "Miss Hei senl in for Poverty Bay, and during the last ! quarter of an hour, in which Southland dominated Miss Ashley put the game beyond all doubt by sending in Southland's fourth shot. ■ : '~«*~- . For tho winners, Miss Burt. (full-back) gave a. very sound exhibition of defensive work. ■ Misses Bell and Geddis were good at half; and Miss Ashley was the best of a clever set of forwards.
