IN A MONASTERY LIBRARY.
(RECTEB'S TELEGRAM.)
(Received 9th September, 9 a.m.)
LONDON, Bth September. ■ The Rome correspondent of the "Observer" states that an Oratorian priest, a friend of Professor Martinofusco, says the discovery was made in a monastery at San Salvatore, famous for its library of manuscripts. ' '
Livy's -History of Rome consisted of 142 books, of which only 35 have been available for many centuries, though the contents of the missing volumes are indicated in epitomes and in transcriptions of portions of the History into other works. According to the previous cable message relating to the discovery, the manuscripts have been missing for 1400 years; but the "Encyclopedia Britannica" says that they appear to have disappeared, "between the seventh century . and the revival of letters in the fifteenth."
