NEW ZEALAND V. WELLINGTON

A TRY-OUT AT PALMERSTON

NORTH.

CBI IELBaSAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

PALMERSTON N-, 20th August. The New Zealand' Soccer eleven, winch is to meet the Chinese team in the second Test at Wellington on Saturday played a one-goal tie with a Wellington team to-day, in good weather, and on a good ground. The showing of the Test team was disappointing, and although there were brilliant individual passages, the Wellington team showed far better combination. ! Wellington were the first to score from beautiful play by Barton (outside right). Ewing (New Zealand goalkeeper) was a trifle slow in clearing, and Barton, following through a fine centre of his own, beat him. -The Dominion team did not equalise until the latter half of the second spell, Cook beating Warrant with a low slanting shot that gave the goalie no chance. The best piece of piny in the match occurred soon after when Gibb (Wellington left full-back)' beat Cook badly for Ihe ball, and passed to Daniels, to Logan The left winger, with a pretty solo ruiij left Anderson. standing, and when the Weliington man shot there did not'appear to be a chance of saving the goal, but twing, anticipating wonderfully, with a left-handed punch, deflected the ball outside the post. t Travels (the Manawatu centre forward) was the All Blacks' outstanding forward, but was starved at right wing in the second half. M'EUigott (Wellington s centre forward) was the best all-round man on the field, and Gibb and Guest (Wellington full-backs) quite outclassed the opposing line. Roots ,(Aew Zealand) was the star hnlf and played a quiet, , attractive, and enn'nI ently useful game.
