THE DAY IN PARLIAMENT

Six members of the House of Representatives stated their views yesterday on the Budget and other matters, and one of them, Mx. JF. J. Rolleston, the Reform member for Timaru, adopted a line of free criticism and struck a refreshing note. Contrary to what the Budget promises, Mr. Rolleston expressed the opinion that, there shonld be no remissions of taxation this year, saying that they were not justified. He would rather see it the other way about, contending that there were various ways in which additional taxation could be profitably applied. Mr. Rolleston also took the somewhat humane view that it is unfair to go on piling up debts for posterity to pay, because posterity will have quite enough troubles of its own without having to honour other people's promissory notes. Six members in all contributed to yesterday's discussion, and at 10.27 p.m. the House rose until 2.30 p.m. to-day.
