HOBSON STREET GULLY
10 THE EDITOR.
Sir,—l was sorry to read in Friday's Evening Post" that the Works Committee of tho City Council recommends the work of filling in the Hobson street gully should be proceeded with It was explained by the deputation of residents in the vicinity who recently waited on the Mayor and City Councillors that the widespread opposition' to tho proposal was due to the belief that the work would destroy one of the amenities of Mie city without advantaging tho object the counpil had in view, namely to relievo the traffic in lower Tinakori road and Molesworth street. ' It \vas pointed out that when tho repairs to the road along Thorndon quay are completed the great bulk of the traffic between the Hutt and the city will iiatlurally follow that road, as there will be no inducement when coming from i th 0 Hutt to climb up-Tinakori road, | cross nito Hobson street, and land back again in Thorndon quay. I believe thero is au impression that the agitation against filling j n the gully emanated Irom the selfish object of preserving tho comparative quietness of the'locality; but 1 think I can assure your readers that this is not the case, nor do I believe the residents would care twopenco if the present footbridge was replaced by a traffic bridge. They consider,' however, this would be a wasto of money. Surely there are more urgent works than this requiring attention in the city, and, if not, might I suggest that the present council should consider a reduction in rates and thereby earn undying fame?—l am, etc., "" W. D. STEWART. 28th July.
